Thanksgiving used to be so simple.
It even felt like a “pure” holiday in comparison to the crass commercialism of the Christmas season. But the smiling faces and neighborly support seen in our Pilgrim stories hide our real history.
Which begs the question: Is it okay to celebrate Thanksgiving?
There are terrible things about Thanksgiving that can't be ignored. And beautiful things about Giving Thanks that can't be denied. Can we acknowledge a past filled with cruelty AND celebrate gratitude?
I think it is possible. I think we can remember the wrongs - while also recognizing the power of gratitude in our lives.
A gratitude practice is scientifically proven to make us happier and healthier.
So as we spend time today reframing Thanksgiving, let’s also make sure to focus on the power of Giving Thanks.
